EastEnders spoilers: Ruby Allen star Louisa Lytton ‘surprised’ at reaction to rape plot | TV & Radio | Showbiz & TV

Now, Ruby star Louisa, who recently returned to the BBC soap, has divulged what she thought of fan reactions to the EastEnders plot.

Louisa appeared on Lorraine this morning to discuss the storyline alongside Rape Crisis’ Katie Russell.

In the candid chat, the actress revealed the response to the hard-hitting plot had “surprised” her.

“[It’s been] a great reaction. I was quite surprised,” she told Lorraine Kelly.

“I’ve had loads of people contact me directly on social media just saying, ‘This is the closure I’ve needed for so long, this incident happened to me 10 years ago, I questioned whether it was rape or not this episode has confirmed to me that in fact it was’.”

Louisa continues: ”I was surprised myself actually just how quickly that reaction has happened and that’s the whole point of this storyline to hopefully open that conversation for men and women and hopefully educate.

“It is important that it’s done right.”

Ruby was raped by Matt, an old school friend of Martin Fowler’s (played by James Bye).

However, Ruby wasn’t certain that she hadn’t been raped because in her shock, she laid there and didn’t tell him “no”.

But Stacey (Lacey Turner) explained how whatever the other circumstances were, Ruby never said “yes” and consented to having sex with him.

It took a lot of courage for Ruby to tearfully explain to Stacey how she had felt in the moment, and it struck a chord with viewers.

Those watching Tuesday’s episode at home took to Twitter to comment on the “heartbreaking” storyline.

“Ruby realising what happened last night. I am sobbing #EastEnders,” one wrote.

Another shared: “My heart is breaking for Ruby, no-one should have to go through this and it’s so upsetting to know people do every day.”

“Omg this is heartbreaking #eastenders,” a third proclaimed.

A fourth said: “@louisalytton. @LaceyTurner you 2 have just had me in tears. #eastenders.”

Meanwhile, some were quick to praise the soap for tackling the important issue.

“Thanks for bringing this to light #Eastenders a story too close to home but it needs to be done #metoo,” one wrote.

Another shared: “I feel like #Eastenders is touching on an incredibly important subject so well rn.”

EastEnders continues tonight at 7.30pm on BBC One.
