Tonight’s Strictly Come Dancing results show was typically explosive as the remaining contestants appeared once again at the Blackpool Tower Ballroom to learn their fate going forward in the BBC competition.
Yet as Tess Daly read out the names of the contestants still safe, sadly newsreader Kate, 48, and her dance partner Aljaž Škorjanec were left in the bottom two.
Trying to stay positive, the pair gave another impressive performance in the dance off against Graeme Swann and Oti Mabuse.
Despite their efforts, the judges unanimously decided to eliminate the couple from the competition, and viewers were left upset by the turn of events.
But surprisingly, one of the most common reasons viewers were angry was down to the public vote.
Many thought after the judges’ scathing criticism of paralympian athlete Lauren Steadman and AJ Pritchard’s dance this weekend, they should have made it into the bottom two instead.
Sharing their thoughts on Twitter, fans couldn’t hide their disappointment at the unexpected development.
One person said: “Going to miss seeing someone with such genuine delight at dancing as @katesilverton. Brilliant dancing with @AljazSkorjanec #Strictly.”
“@katesilverton @AljazSkorjanec Absolutely loved watching you every week, so sad to see you go #strictly #Blackpool,” another shared.
A third cried: “What just happened! #kate and #aliaz should have stayed! C’mon judges, get to Specsavers! #strictly.”
While a fourth noted: “Aw I liked Kate, sad to see her go. Really Lauren should have gone as she was way worse than the others but hey ho #Strictly.”
“No not Kate who is voting for Lauren? #Strictly,” a fifth simply asked.
Viewers continued to share their well wishes for journalist Kate, claiming she was a true Strictly Come Dancing competitor.
“@katesilverton absolutely gutted you’ve gone! You embodied everything #Strictly should be. I salute you! X,” one person exclaimed.
Another complained: “Wrong couple left. Kate had great footwork – and those pivots – whereas Graeme walked around stage with an umbrella.
“Kate was improving week by week, whereas Graeme peaked weeks ago and had been on borrowed time ever since. Poor Kate – she deserved better from the show. #Strictly.”
While one fan hinted another celebrity should have been in the bottom two once more, tweeting: “Both @Swannyg66 and @katesilverton did so well tonight. Neither are trained dancers and epitomise what #strictly is all about.”
Following her exit, Kate shared: “Can I say a few thanks? There are so many people behind the scenes that as a viewer you don’t get to realise just what it takes to put this programme on air.
“You guys as professionals work really really hard, but it’s everybody behind the scenes as well. The runners, the production crew, the hair, wardrobe and makeup. So a big thank you to all of them.
“And if I can just do a thank you to this one (Aljaz) because I am so lucky to have had you as my teacher. And as you said we’ve learnt so much from each other, we’ve become such good friends and you have just made this the most incredible experience,” the emotional contestant added.
