Season eight of The Walking Dead left off with Rick (played by Andrew Lincoln), Daryl (Norman Reedus) and Maggie (Lauren Cohan) at major odds with each other.
Rick made the controversial decision to allow evil villain Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) to live following a season of heartache and death, and his closest allies couldn’t make sense of it.
The former sheriff was determined to honour his son Carl Grimes’ (Chandler Riggs) memory, and following the teenager’s final letter it seemed that was the only way.
But as they got wind of his actions, Daryl and Maggie were left puzzled and unable to hide their anger at Rick.
As details continue to trickle through about the AMC series’ ninth offering, executive producer Angela has given fans a first look into the relationships going forward.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, she revealed: “We’ll see a lot of the core relationships.
“We’ll be delving into those and seeing how people are thinking about bigger problems.
“And thinking about their philosophies, and thinking about how people come together and create civilisation and what those rules are going to be.”
“And also how you contend with it,” the boss explained.
But how that materialise with the group’s core leaders?
The writer went on to share viewers can expect to see some “changes in the way the characters deal with each other”.
But Daryl, Maggie and Rick’s feud will be the most difficult to solve.
Angela continued: “There will definitely be story about Maggie and Daryl and Rick and where they are at with each other.
“I don’t want to spoil too much about that storyline, but there will be some surprises along the way with it.”
“It’s definitely something that we will be exploring this season,” she added.
Meanwhile, it was recently revealed the show is undergoing some huge changes when it returns in the autumn, including a change in location.
The Alexandrians will be relocating to Washington DC, where the post-apocalyptic world is very different to what fans have previously seen.
The zombie horror will have a new “western vibe”, and sets will include horses and carriages as well as crumbling buildings.
Will the mystery helicopter return too? And how exactly will Rick exit the hugely-popular drama?
The Walking Dead season 9 will return to AMC and FOX in the UK later this year.
